A brilliant and versatile composer, activist and musician, Alex Shapiro writes for films to chamber groups. Shapiro uses a unique approach to the sonic journey on which she takes the musicians and listeners. With electroacoustic pieces, she create a new digital audio palette from scratch. Shapiro is famous for compositions with combination of acoustic instruments and digital tracks.
The Commissioned Composer Project, begun in 1967 by Professor Emeritus Conrad De Jong, is the longest standing program of its kind in the United States, putting a national spotlight on the UW-River Falls Music Department. A new work is written and the composer comes to the campus to interact with the students and take part in the premiere performance of that work.
